World Access to Higher Education Day Announced

World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED) this year will be on 26th November 2019. The theme this year will be ‘Advocating for Equity’.

In 2018 the MCO participated in the first WAHED which saw access initiatives from around the world showcased and was inspirational for those who participated.

The MCO supported the initiative as part of universities’ responsibility to society is to contribute to ensuring wider access.

This theme will be picked up in the new Magna Charta which will shortly be issued for consultation and there will be a workshop on access and equity in the MCO’s Anniversary conference which this year will be held in association with McMaster University, Hamilton Canada on 16 October. (Details of how to book can be found at https://magna-charta.mcmaster.ca/

The WAHED organisers ‘look forward to once again having as many WAHED-branded activities occurring on or around the day as possible’. ‘We want to focus on encouraging governments, universities and others to make meaningful commitments that will lead to greater equity in access and participation in higher education.’

‘This year participation can include organising an event at your organisation, launching a social media campaign, writing to policymakers and in other ways.’

Further information about WAHED and how to get involved is available on the WAHED website - https://worldaccesshe.com/ - from Graeme Atherton who can be reached at graeme.atherton@londonhigher.ac.uk
