After the success of a first Summer School organised by the Bologna Observatory in June 2004 in Corfu, with the support of the Greek authorities, the Ministry decided to renew the experience in 2005 and asked the Magna Charta to help sponsor the event next June at Kontokali Bay Hotel. The general theme chosen for this year is: Universities Europe: a potential for institutional convergence. The Greek National Centre for Educational Research (KEE), the Ionian University and the University of Ioannina acted as local organisers.
Staged for 16 academic leaders and university administrators from South East European and Central Asian countries with which Greece has been developing long term university co-operation, the Summer School aimed at strengthening academic linkages in the region by discussing the common objectives of different systems of higher education and research as well as the shared strategies and operational procedures that are required by the European Higher Education Area. Work was based on the various activities and publications of the Magna Charta Observatory on autonomy and academic freedom.
The programme was arranged around morning meetings (from 9 a.m. to 12.30) and evening sessions (from 18.00 to 20.00) - which left afternoons free for informal discussions and personal study. The morning was dedicated to debates on the present and future development of higher education structures in the wider Europe while, in the late afternoon, participants were invited to discuss the political consequences of various academic choices in the form of case studies. Each session was the responsibility of a 'facilitator' - an expert in European university affairs. Participants were encouraged to take an active part in the discussions - that could be informal considering the restricted number of participants.
