The Observatory hosted a lunch in Bangkok on 16 November to meet with signatories and institutions interested in signing the MCU in the ASEAN region.

The lunch was part of the MCO’s strategy to operate more globally and to interact more closely with signatories.

It was attended by 33 Rectors or senior university officials and regional officers. Discussions focused on particular issues facing the region which ranged from access to higher education to achieving more comprehensive internationalisation.

All of those present were invited to participate in the MCO’s workshop on values in practice which is to take place in Glasgow in January. (More details can be found at https://events.unibo.it/mco-gcu-workshop-fundamental-values-in-practice-glasgow-january-2017)

The lunch followed the MCO’s participation in the IAU international conference during which it had held a workshop. A report of this, with the presentations, will follow.

During the closing presentation the newly elected President of the IAU, Professor Pam Fredman, spoke of the need for universities to ‘go back to the Magna Charta values when considering their responses to external pressures and stakeholder demands’. It would be helpful if universities could explicitly mention these values to re-enforce them in their dealings with stakeholders.

It was encouraging to receive such strong support from MCU signatories during the conference and the MCO looks forward to developing its strategy further in the ASEAN and in other regions.
