BACKGROUND

The Corfu yearly encounter being well appreciated by its participants, university leaders from South East Europe mainly, the Greek government decided to pursue the support of the Summer School and the Magna Charta was asked to facilitate another session in 2006 – thus testing the value and interest of its on-going work on a group of partner institutions which experience the political, financial and social difficulties that are usual in transition countries.

In June 2006, the Kontokali Bay Hotel welcomed some 19 participants from Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia, Greece, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Bosnia Hercegovina, and Macedonia, the focus of the discussions being placed on Tuesday 20 June most half day sessions being facilitated by members of the Observatory. Also a way to keep in touch with the problems met by university leaders in their daily work – when confronted to academic development and trends of international scope, for instance the implementation of the Bologna process that was now affecting universities at curriculum level – sometime with clear reluctance from students and staff, for example in Greece – a fact that led to vivid discussions about ‘Eurocompatibility’.
