The Magna Charta Observatory is pleased to be supporting Kings College London with the following two activities which will take place in London on 8 and 9 May.

 

1.       Promoting the Fundamental Values of Higher Education through Effective Monitoring

Day and Date: Wednesday, 8th May 2024

Time: 14.00-18:00

Venue: Glass Suites, Franklin-Wilkins Building, Waterloo campus, King’s College London

Format: in person

Activity type: Peer-learning; consultation.

 

The event will include the presentation and discussion of the results from piloting the newly proposed mechanism for monitoring the fundamental values of higher education in the countries of European Higher Education Area*, ahead of the final adoption of this mechanism in summer 2024.

 

2.       Emerging frameworks of reference and conceptual references for the fundamental values of higher education in today’s world: conceptualisation, codification, monitoring, practice

Day and Date: Thursday, 9th May 2024

Time: 12.00-16.00 (including lunch for participants in person)

Venue: BH (S) 1.01, Bush House, South Wing, King’s College London

Event Format: Hybrid

 

The event will include:

-          Two panel-discussions (for mutual information) with representatives of international and national organisations engaged in developing conceptual references and frameworks of reference for the fundamental values of higher education and/or related values in research.

A framework of reference in this context is understood to include guidelines for the practice and protection of these values, elements of codification (such as legal and other norms, regulations, codes of conduct, and provisions about institutional mechanisms be utilised in order to implement the respective understanding and codification of individual values).

 

-          The presentation of the Principles for Reimagining Academic Freedom.

 

Organisations invited include UNESCO, the UN, Scholars at Risk, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council on Higher Education of South Africa, the EHEA Working Group on the Fundamental Values of Higher Education, Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory, the American Association of University Professors, the Global Observatory on Academic Freedom, Academic Freedom and Internationalisation Working Group, etc.

 

Participation is by invitation only and a number of places have been made available for the Magna Charta Observatory.

Places will be allocated on or before 29 April 2024 and successful applicants will be advised.

 

* The fundamental values of higher education, as officially adopted in 2020 by the 49 countries of the EHEA, are: academic freedom, institutional autonomy, academic integrity, participation of students and staff in higher education governance, public responsibility for higher education, and public responsibility of higher education.
