Congratulations to the winner of 2024

The Magna Charta Observatory is pleased to announce this year's winners of the 2nd edition of the MCO Students' Essay Competition.

This year, the essay question was: "What would you change about your higher education experience or environment to make it more inclusive for all who have the ability to benefit from it?".

One hundred and forty-four essays were received from students in 45 countries. They were assessed independently by the 5 judges, who met together to determine the result of the competition.

The following winners (listed in alphabetical order of their country) were declared:

  • Hellena Silva Leão, Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (UFCSPA), Brazil
  • Samanntha Lee, McMaster University, Canada
  • Daniel Adeagbo, University of Lagos, Nigeria
  • Fatima Masood, COMSATS University Islamabad, Pakistan
  • Ignacy Maliszewski, Uniwersytet SWPS Warszawa, Poland

The following essay was Highly Commended, and awarded a Certificate of Merit:

  • Amanda Wangari, United States International Universty-Africa, Keyna

The five winners will be flown to participate in the launch of the World Access to Higher Education Network (WAHEN) at an event in Oxford, UK on the 9th and 10th December 2024. All the winning and the Highly Commended essays can be read now on our Website.

The event has funding support from both The Saville Foundation and the Lumina Foundation, to whom we are grateful.

The potential contribution that those who submitted essays to the competition have made to enabling universities to consider the engagement of students so that they can make a more effective contribution to society is potentially considerable.

The MCO appreciates and thanks all who entered the competition!
