On 17 June 2021 the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 was signed for the first time in Bologna by the Rector of the University of Bologna.

On 17 June 2021 the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 was signed for the first time in Bologna by the Rector of the University of Bologna. The ceremony was broadcast globally via a webinar and included videos of the how the principles, values and responsibilities in the new Magna Charta being put into practice by signatories.

The event was a virtual replacement for the celebration which had been planned for Bologna in September 2020, but which was frustrated by the pandemic.

On the previous day Jamil Salmi, formerly the Tertiary Education Coordinator at the World Bank, had given a global perspective on environmental changes since 1988 and the challenges of the future and Michael Ignatieff, President and Rector of the Central European University had presented a university’s response.

This was followed by sessions on the need for a new Magna Charta, the new Magna Charta and its benefits to university, society and students.

Finally, after the first signing, reflections were shared from the MCO webinars leading up to the launch. These included the response to Covid, achieving the sustainable development goals, widening access and achieving equity, ‘Universities without walls – the EUA strategy’ and involving students effectively.
