Ukrainian Colloquium, Donetsk/Mariupol
Date:
Type: Special Events
In June 2004, Rectors Shevshenko (Donetsk State University) and Balabanov (Mariupol State University of Humanities) joined the Magna Charta Summer School - organised in Corfu with the support of the Greek government - to discuss the principles founding the common identity of European universities and the rights and obligations of academic institutions when managing their integration in today's emerging knowledge society.
Last September, they joined university rectors from many parts of Europe - also several compatriots from Ukraine - to sign, in Bologna, the Magna Charta Universitatum. At present, some ten universities from various Ukrainian cities have signed the Magna Charta while the country, as a whole, was expected to join the Bologna process in May 2005 (Berlin Ministerial Conference) - thus pointing to the importance of belonging and contributing to the European academic community as a whole.
At the invitation of the recently created State University of Humanities at Mariupol, the Magna Observatory agreed to hold the Summer meeting of its Collegium on the Azov Sea and to take advantage of its visit to Ukraine to meet the leaders of higher education in that country where change is taking many aspects, legal and socio-economic, that ask for a unique contribution from the system of higher education and research. Magna Charta signatories represented the core group of an encounter opened to a larger group of Ukrainian key academic leaders. Comparing notes on the dynamics of transformation and innovation was the main objective of a conversation that was structured around the shared aims of academic work in a country as wide and diverse as Ukraine.
The topic is much too ample to be dealt with fully in two days, even if the discussions are intensive. The indicated sub-themes are possible foci in a structured conversation. The meeting acted as a think-tank in which participants could brainstorm freely - testing ideas with colleagues rather than presenting a case for support.
