Event location: Corfu, Greece
Type: Special Events
The Corfu yearly encounter brings together university leaders from South East Europe and, in 2007, from Kazakhstan too – the possibility of a Summer School for Central Asia being explored at the request of the universities from that region that have signed the Magna Charta. The Greek government continued its support of the Summer School, the Ionian University in Corfu acting as the key organiser of the meeting. The Magna Charta accepted to facilitate another session in 2007 – by keeping at the centre of interest the activities of he Observatory as they touch universities in the region – in their definition of academic freedom, institutional autonomy or in their struggle against academic malpractices that risk reducing academic credibility In June 2007, the group was small but remarkable in the vivacity of the discussions; the School was joined by some 16 participants from Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania and Greece, the focus of the discussions being placed on structural changes in institutions wishing to meet international criteria of performance. The half day sessions were facilitated by members of the Observatory or close friends of the programme directly involved in the activities being discussed – the Bologna process remaining a key aspect of possible change, especially after the London meeting of the Ministers of Education that preceded the Corfu encounter by a few days.
