The first Global Forum for Higher Education and Scientific Research in Egypt took place in Al Masa, the new administrative capital near Cairo, in April. Egypt has declared 2019 as ‘the year of education’ and the Forum was a significant statement to mark the year. The opening was attended by the Egyptian President, H.E. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Minister of Education H.E. Professor Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar played a leading role, including presiding over the opening and closing sessions.

The Observatory was honoured to be asked to lead on the second day, the theme being ‘the Fundamental Academic Values and their Importance’. Secretary General David Lock chaired the session and President Dr Sijbolt Noorda was the keynote speaker. Some 800 people attended.

MCO Council member Professor Mohamed Loutfi presided over a session on the ‘Internationalisation of Higher Education’ which was likewise well attended.

The success of the event, which also featured an exhibition and student-focussed events, was such that a second edition is to be held form 2-4 April 2020.
