MCO Connect – Issue #1 - Be an Ambassador for the MCO

February 2022

Be an Ambassador for the MCO

Apply by February 21, 2022

The Observatory’s objective is to play an active role in guaranteeing the respect, protection and promotion of the fundamental values and university rights set out in the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU), signed in Bologna in 1988 and developed in the MCU 2020. The Observatory acts as the guardian of these values and assists signatories and other universities in the understanding and implementation of them.

Senior leaders from higher education around the world, known as ‘ambassadors’, work with the MCO to fulfil these responsibilities. They work with the Living Value pilot sites, contribute to events organised by the MCO, assist with gathering information, developing guidelines and resources, undertake reviews and provide quality assurance or reports where necessary.

As part of its strategy the MCO wishes to increase the number of ambassadors and increase the number of countries from which they come. Applications and nominations are being accepted until February 21, 2022 for up to 10 new ambassadors.

The extent and amount of involvement in each project is by agreement with the MCO. Engagement in projects will be face to face or virtual depending on the circumstances of each project and the ability and willingness to travel at the time.

Why be an MCO Ambassador?

There is no retainer or fee for being or serving as an ambassador. The engagement is a professional one with ambassadors being invited to attend the MCO’s annual conference and anniversary free of charge. Expenses incurred for training and assignments undertaken will either be reimbursed by the MCO in accordance with the Observatory’s regulations, including travel and hotel expenses, or they will be met by the university being visited.

Training is provided and will take place in Stockholm on 20-22 June 2022. Events are structured so that there is professional benefit to ambassadors personally from which their university may also benefit.

Who should apply?
Applicants and nominees demonstrate commitment to the values expressed in the Magna Charta Universitatum (which can be found at www.magna-charta.org), are experienced at undertaking reviews in the fields of academic freedom and institutional autonomy, or accreditation and validation. Applicants and nominees should have the following qualifications:

  • Substantial experience in higher education, ideally at a senior level
  • A high level of awareness of the role of universities in their national and international contexts, along with an awareness of internationalisation, professional credibility, sensitivity towards local circumstances, due tact and diplomacy
  • Experience in developing and refining protocols and of quality assurance processes in higher education and should demonstrate integrity and political astuteness
  • Experience with working in a virtual environment

As part of the role, ambassadors should be available, with reasonable notice, to undertake reviews where these are requested and must be available to attend a development event on 20-22 June 2022 in Stockholm.
